Description

This internship offers advanced high-school students the opportunity to be involved with cutting-edge research in vision science. In this immersive experience, students will be involved in every step of the research process, and will be working alongside Whitney lab members to create and test novel research paradigms. Additionally, students will learn advanced computer coding and statistical analysis techniques that are fundamental to a successful career in all scientific fields. 

Interns will be learning about a wide variety of different topics including:

  • How the brain analyzes crowds of faces

  • How the brain analyzes visual motion 

  • How the visual system interprets binocular cues in 3D movies

  • Why the brain is tricked by visual illusions

Applicant Qualifications

Open to all high school students. Scholarships for low income students are available -- please contact the program for more information.

Application Guidelines:

This is a highly competitive internship program. We will admit as many qualified students as possible, but space is limited. Please enroll early to maximize your chances of admission. In assessing applications, we consider the following:

a) Academic performance  

  • Overall G.P.A

  • Grades earned in particularly relevant courses (math, science, computer programming, and psychology ) 

  • Standardized Test Scores (including TOEFL for international applicants)

We also consider the student's overall passion for learning vision science, and we consider the student's personal traits, such as work ethic, leadership skills, collaborative skills, problem solving abilities, and creativity. 

b) Statement of Purpose:  This statement should contain a 300 word (or less) description of the student's past accomplishments and future goals, and a 250 word statement describing what specific skills the student hopes to attain from the Perception Science Internship 

c) Contact Information of Two Recommenders:  Recommenders should be able to personally attest to the applicant's intelligence, motivation, and diligence.
