Description

The American Heart Association Youth Equity Council is looking for sophomores and juniors  who are interested in learning and promoting health equity amongst youth. Through the Council, members learn about child health inequities, conduct research on the health priorities in their communities, receive mentoring from leaders in the field, design solutions and advocate for change. The Youth Health Equity Council is a collaboration between the American Heart Association, UCSF Center for Child and Community Health and UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals.

By participating in this cohort, students will engage in project-based learning to:

  • Improve health and wellbeing in their communities
  • Understand how and why where people live, learn, work and play affects their health Be a part of a student-led council
  • Gain leadership and public speaking skills
  • Engage in public health and policy advocacy
  • Participate in community engagement and service activities
  • Conduct youth-led community research

Additional details:

  • October to May timeframe
  • Participants will receive a $50 gift card at the satisfactory completion of each meeting (can be helpful in covering the cost of transportation)
Applicant Qualifications
  • Minimum 2.5 GPA
  • Currently a sophomore or junior 
  • Be able to provide a two-year commitment
  • Able to participate in 90% of monthly meetings/activities in Oakland and San Francisco
